Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)?

We are looking for caring, patient and dedicated SLCN Specialist Teaching Assistants to support pupils with communication and language difficulties across a range of schools and educational settings.

The Role

As an SLCN Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will provide targeted support to help pupils develop their communication, language, understanding and confidence.

You may use a range of strategies and techniques, including:

• Visual timetables, symbols and other visual supports.
• Makaton or other forms of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), where appropriate.
• Modelling language and expanding pupils’ vocabulary and sentences.
• Supporting pupils to follow instructions and develop understanding.
• Using communication boards, objects, pictures or technology to support communication.
• Supporting turn-taking, listening and conversational skills.
• Using structured activities and targeted communication interventions.
• Encouraging pupils to communicate their needs, thoughts and ideas.
• Adapting resources and the learning environment to support communication.

Your responsibilities may also include:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support.
• Supporting pupils to access learning and participate in school life.
• Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
• Supporting communication, interaction and social skills.
• Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, speech and language therapists and families.
• Supporting pupils’ confidence, independence and emotional wellbeing.

Experience supporting children with SLCN, speech and language difficulties, autism or other communication needs is desirable. Experience in education, childcare, care, psychology, therapy or similar environments may also be highly relevant.
