A 1-form-entry school in New Cross are looking for a Learning Mentor to join their school to support pastoral care across all year groups and to act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.

The Role

As the learning mentor for the school your role will be to deliver a specialist learning mentor service bridging learning and pastoral support for children and those engaged with them in order to remove barriers to learning and raise standards. You will carry a case load and offer timetabled support to individual pupils across the whole school. You may be based in classrooms as well as providing 1:1 interventions outside classrooms. You will also support the designated safeguarding lead within the school.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • To develop and maintain effective and supportive mentoring relationships with children (including those with complex and challenging needs), parents and those engaged with them
  • Establish referral procedures and criteria for learning mentor support and specify clearly cases that require highest and or immediate priority through working with the staff team
  • To assist staff in identifying pupils needing mentoring support and those who would benefit from mentoring help to overcome barriers to learning; and to provide assessments of their personal, social and emotional needs
  • To manage and be responsible for a caseload of individual mentees including those with complex and challenging needs. Innovate and deliver effective, alternative programmes to raise motivation, aspirations and develop positive behaviours.
  • To be the focal point for pupils needing additional care, guidance and support and those going through complex key transition stages in their lives e.g. family break up, loss, bereavement, friendships, illness, secondary school transition
  • Update and monitor safeguarding concerns liaising with MASH as needed
  • Provide reports for governors and external services e.g. referral forms for MASH
The school are looking for a learning mentor who has the following:
  • Relevant experience in a school setting
  • An excellent understanding of how to support pupils with social and emotional needs
  • High-level communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and administration skills

The role is offered on a part-time basis with Mondays and Fridays all day, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons but this is subject to negotiation for an outstanding candidate.

The role will be initially offered as a temporary contract but will be a permanent role in the school.

At it’s latest Ofsted the school was rated ‘good’ with pupils demonstrating excellent behaviour and a commitment to learning. The school has a Christian ethos which is celebrated and incorporated in to the daily life of the school. The school has a strong community feel and the school is well supported by parents. There is an established and dedicated headteacher and senior leadership in place at the school and staff are welcoming and friendly.
